Dawson slips past Dobie 38-28

PEARLAND — The Dawson Eagles got past the Dobie Longhorns 38-28 to remain undefeated and atop the 22-6A leaderboard, but it wasn't pretty.

Dobie led at the end of the first quarter 9-6 before Dawson showed some evidence of life to take the second period 9-4 for a 15-13 halftime lead.

Only three players scored a single basket in the opening period for the Eagles before Paul Taulton finally scored six of Dawson's nine points in the second quarter on a field goal and 4-for-5 from the free throw line.

Randy Dobbs was the difference-maker in the second half as he hit three driving layups and a free throw for seven points in the third and closed out the game with two baskets and two free throws in the fourth quarter to finish with a game-high 14 points.

Taulton was the only other player that got in the scoring column in the third with two baskets to give the Eagles a 26-18 lead as Dobie was able to muster only five points.

The Eagles closed out the Longhorns 12-10 despite hitting only 5-of-13 free throws in the fourth to post the final score 38-28.

"I'm not sure where this team was for this game," Dawson head coach Mark Barre said after the game. "There was very little team spirit and leadership.

"It is hard to believe that we are 6-0 in district and 22 games in the season and still looking for someone to lead this team."

Taulton finished the game with 12 points.

Dawson will host the Alvin Yellowjackets on Tuesday, Jan. 19 to begin the second round of district action. They will travel to face Sam Rayburn on Friday, Jan. 22. All games begin at 7:00 p.m.
