PEARLAND — Head coach Isabel Gomez has seen her team improve week after week and was confident that her girls could compete against the Friendswood Lady Mustangs when they arrived at the Eagles Nest.
Friendswood entered the contest tied with Dawson for second place in District 24-4A after the Lady 'Stangs lost to league-leading Goose Creek Memorial earlier in the week. However, while Friendswood would fall to Dawson, GC Memorial fell to Ball High (54-45) to leave them tied with Dawson at 6-1 and tied atop the 24-4A leaderboard while Friendswood is in third place at 5-2.
The opening quarter set the tone for the game as Dawson came out with a full-court press which caught Friendswood off guard. After multiple turnovers and fouls by the Lady Mustangs, Dawson went on a 10-0 run to begin the game and eventually led 22-13 after the opening eight minutes.
Dawson hit a 3-pointer, three baskets, and was 13-of-17 from the free throw line while Friendswood six baskets and was 1-of-4 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Eagles continued their defensive pressure which limited Friendswood to only one field goal and two free throws while Dawson's Kasi Matthews went on a scoring spree of seven points while the Lady Eagles added 15 more points in the second frame for a 37-17 halftime lead.
Friendswood outscored Dawson in the third 8-6 to close the gap to 43-25, but the Lady Eagles closed the door in the final quarter 15-9 including three 3-pointers. Dawson led 58-30 at one point in the final period before settling for the 58-34 victory.
“I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Dawson head coach Isabel Gomez said. “We decided to come out with the full-court pressure and I don't think they were expecting that. The first minute was incredible in starting off with the 10-0 run."
Matthews led the scoring for Dawson with 13 points while Cree Hammond added 10.
Caitlin Modesett led the scoring for Friendswood with seven points.
The Lady Mustangs hit only 4-of-11 from the free throw line.
Dawson 65 - Baytown Lee 16
The Lady Eagles got an easy 65-16 win early last week over the Baytown Lee Lady Ganders to remain tied for the district lead with Goose Creek Memorial.
The game wasn't close as the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 15-1 first quarter and continued the scoring onslaught 24-7 in the second quarter for a lopsided 39-8 lead at intermission.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Lady Eagles took the final two quarters 16-4 and 10-4 to post the easy 65-16 win.
Cree Hammond continues to lead the offense with 14 points while Corlissa Charles and Monica Gomes each had 10 points.
