Washington's buzzer beater nips Dawson 54-51 in OT

PEARLAND — The Pearland roundballers finished the first round of district 2-4 and in a must-win situation if they were going to make the playoffs this season.

On the other hand, the Dawson Eagles entered the district showdown in first place at 7-1 and looking to win their seventh straight league title. Their only loss was to the Oilers in the first round by 57-56.

As everyone expected in a packed Eagles Nest at Dawson High School, the two cross-town cousins would battle till the final second and plus some as the game was still tied 46-46 at the end of regulation sending the contest into an extra four minutes.

The Oilers came out strong in the opening quarter for a 16-13 lead thanks to a seven-point effort by senior Ovidio Perez.

But Pearland's offense went cold in the second period as Dawson doubled the point total 14-7 for a 27-23 lead at intermission.

With 3:51 left in the first half, Dawson was trailing 21-20 when Dawson's Andrew Eberhardt nailed a 3-pointer giving the Eagles a 23-21 advantage.

Dawson outscored the visitors 4-2 the rest of the way for the 27-23 halftime lead.

Both teams battled in the third quarter, but the Oilers couldn't make up the difference as Dawson took the frame 10-9 for a 37-32 lead entering the final eight minutes.

Pearland's pressing defense frustrated the Eagles who were held to only nine points in the quarter.

Meanwhile, the Oilers pumped in 14 points to tie up the game 46-46 all sending the game into an extra period.

The game continued back-and-forth as Eberhardt hit a 3-pointer giving the Eagles a 51-49, but the Oilers got a basket by Kevin Shead to tie up the game 51-51.

Pearland got a rebound from a missed Dawson shot with 49.2 second remaining and held the ball before calling time out with 7.2 seconds left in the game.

The Oilers threw the ball inbounds that ended up in the hands of junior Javarius Washington, who dribbled to the top of the key, launched the ball beyond the 3-point arc that found nothing but net as the final buzzer sounded giving Pearland the 54-51 victory as the Oiler crowd exploded with excitement.

Pearland has knocked off both times this season and are undefeated in the second round to improve to 6-4 with a four-game winning streak.

Dawson falls to 7-2, but are still in control of winning the league crown and advancing to the post-season.

Dawson was led on offense by Lorenzo Waddy who scored 15 points.

Pearland will take their four-game winning streak to face George Ranch and Brazoswood to close out the regular season.

The Eagles will close out their season with all three Alief schools -- Elsik, Taylor, and Hastings.
