Dawson wins District 22-6A championship

PEARLAND — The Dawson Eagles capped their first-year in District 22-6 by winning the league crown with a 15-1 mark. The Eagles beat South Houston 38-37 in their final league contest and to grab the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

The only loss by the Eagles was to Manvel who went through the first round undefeated at 8-0 while Dawson finished just a game back at 7-1.

But Manvel had a melt-down in the second round losing four games to finish in second place while Dawson swept the district 8-0.

Dawson had a bye on Tuesday and will begin the playoffs next week as the No. 1 seed.

he win over South Houston was the 11th straight victory for the Eagles while wrapping up the District 22-6A crown.

Dawson is now 28-5 overall on the season and have a lot of momentum going into the post-season.

South Houston (10-5 in district) led 13-8 after one quarter before Dawson rallied to tie the game at 17 by halftime.

The Trojans grabbed a 27-24 lead after three quarters before Dawson won the final period 14-10 to escape with the win.

The score was 38-37 with only 22.1 seconds left in the game. After a South Houston timeout, the decision was made to go for the final shot with the game on the line.

South Houston threw the ball in, took a couple of passes against the pressing Dawson defense.

With only 3.2 seconds showing on the clock, a South Houston player fumbled a pass, picked up the ball with the clock counting down, took a desperation shot that didn't come close giving the Eagles the hard-fought game.

Randy Dobbs led Dawson with 10 points.
