Dawson captures ninth straight district title


PEARLAND DAWSON — The Dawson Eagles entered the final District 23-6A regular season game tied with George Ranch as both teams were 10-3.

A win by the Eagles and win by cross-town cousin Pearland over George Ranch would give the Eagles their ninth straight district championship. Dawson has shared or won outright the nine titles starting when they were competing in Class 4A.

For the past five seasons, they have won the 23-6A title.

Dawson delivered on their end with a 56-38 win over Alief Elsik that eliminated the Rams from the post-season while Pearland slipped by George Ranch 51-50 to give the Eagles the outright title. The win by Dawson helped the Oilers capture the No. 4 seed slot in the playoffs.

The Eagles dominated the Rams by taking a 15-10 lead after the first period. Dawson took the second quarter 14-11 for a 29-21 halftime lead.

The third quarter stayed close as Dawson edged Elsik 13-11 for a 42-32 advantage.

The fourth quarter blew the game open as the Eagles outscored the Rams 14-6 to post the 56-38 final score.

Dekedran Thorn led the Eagles offense with 13 points while Micah Thomas tossed in 11.
