Dawson nips Pearland 3-2 in district softball showdown

Pearland senior pitcher Abigail Gutierrez was the winning pitcher in the 6-2 district win over the Alvin Lady Yellowjackets.

Gutierrez allowed seven hits, five runs, 11 strikeouts, and four walks.

The No. 13 state-ranked Pearland Lady Oilers (20-3, 3-1) entered their game against cross-town cousin and No.10 state-ranked Dawson (20-3, 3-0) in a first round district showdown and the Lady Eagles hung on for a 3-2 win.

The battle began in the pitching circle as both teams got a strong performance between Pearland senior lefthander Abigail Gutierrez and Dawson senior righthander Gigi Solis.

Gutierrez pitched six innings, allowed six hits, three runs while striking out 11 and issuing three walks while taking the loss.

Solis pitched seven frames, allowed seven hits, two runs while striking out four and walking four to get the win.

The Lady Oilers scored first in the top of the opening frame when Kayle Schwetzer drilled a one-out single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Raenna Liscano, and scored on a double by Kristyn Whitlock for a 1-0 lead.

Dawson took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when Evey Dieudonne singled to left field, moved to second following a walk to Sa'Mya Jones and both runners scored on a double by Makenzie Wright.

The Lady Eagles would add another run in the bottom of the fourth when Cara Pitman singled and scored on a single by Caroline Roth to make the score 3-1.

Meanwhile, both pitchers continued their strong showing throughout the game.

Pearland made a final attempt to tie or take the lead in the top of the seventh when Jordan Smith opened the frame with a single, stole second, moved to third on an error by the shortstop that allowed Schweitzer to reach second on the throw.

Liscano doubled to centerfield to plate Smith and to close the gap to 3-2, but Dawson ended the game on a foul popup by Lydia Njus leaving the bases loaded.

Leading hitters for Dawson were Dieudonne (2-for-3, 1 run), Wright (1-for-3, 2 RBIs), and Pitman (1-for-3, 1 run).

Alvin jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead off pitcher Abigail Gutierrez, but the lefty settled down while her teammates took control of the game as the Lady Oilers scored three runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the bottom of the second for a 6-2 lead.

The Lady Yellowjackets scored a run in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fifth to narrow the score to 6-5 before Pearland blew the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four more in the bottom of the sixth for the 13-5 district win.

Gutierrez picked up the win after allowing seven hits, five runs, 11 strikeouts, and four walks.
