PEARLAND — The Dawson Lady Eagles opened up District 24-4A action with a 6-4 loss to the Santa Fe Lady Indians. Both teams were pre-season picks to challenge for the district crown. Santa Fe has a one-game edge over the Lady Eagles in the league standings in the opening round.
Despite the disappointing loss, Dawson has rebounded with three straight wins to improve to 3-1 in the standings. The Lady Eagles have beaten Galena Park (10-0), Texas City (10-5), and most recently Goose Creek Memorial (9-5). Dawson is 14-6 overall.
Goose Creek Memorial jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Dawson starter Megan Stone issued a walk followed by an Dawson error placing two runners on base. A ground out moved the runners to second and third and a single scored GC Memorial's first run of the game. The Lady Eagles got a double play to end the scoring threat.
Dawson took the lead in the bottom of the second as the Lady Eagles took advantage of two hits by Niki Turner and Jena Guse plus a walk and error helped Dawson to plate two runs. Dawson added one more run in the frame to take a 3-1 lead.
After Memorial scored another run in the top of the third to cut the margin to 3-2, Dawson's Rylie Rodriguez opened up the bottom of the third with a towering home run over the left centerfield fence to spot Dawson to a 4-2 lead. Rose Sullivan and Turner hit back-to-back singles and Turner would eventually score after Memorial got a double play. Amber Langston punched a single to centerfield to plate Turner.
GC Memorial used a two-run homer off Stone to cut the lead to 5-4 in the top of the the fourth.
Dawson answered in their half of the fourth when Stone blasted a two-run double to increase the lead to 7-4.
Memorial scored their final run of the game in the top of the fifth and then Dawson added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a bases load single to post the 9-5 final score.
The Lady Eagles pounded out 16 total hits for nine runs while Stone, who picked up the win, allowed five runs on 11 hits, walked two, and struck out a pair.
