Dawson gets pair of district wins

PEARLAND — The Dawson Lady Eagles are staying in the District 22-6A playoff race, but they are still on the bubble for the final and fourth spot.

Head coach David McCorkle knows they Lady Eagles can't afford any losses the rest of the way in district play if they hope to extend their season.

Last week, Dawson almost lost a game that they were heavy favorites to win.

In the first round, Dawson thrashed Sam Rayburn 14-3 in an easy win. However, last week the Lady Eagles had to depend on junior Rylee Rodriquez to slam a three-run walk-off home run to post a 10-7 victory over the Lady Texans.

District teams have been pitching around Rodriquez for most of the season as the slugger averages a home run every three trips at bat.

McCorkle has Rodriquez as the clean-up hitter in the lineup and opposing teams have just walked her. However, McCorkle decided to make her the lead-off hitter and force Sam Rayburn to either pitch to her or walk her to begin the game.

The plan worked to perfection in the final inning. Trailing 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh, Dawson's sixth hitter, Gabrielle Chacon walked, Amber Stone reached base on an error, and Amanda DeLuna walked to load the bases.

Alexis Zarate lofted a fly to left to score Chacon to knot up the game at 7-7 which brought up Rodriquez from her leadoff slot.

There was no room on the base paths and a walk would have sent in the winning run so Sam Rayburn was forced to face Rodriquez who in turn took a 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for the walk-off game winner.

Rodriquez was 3-for-5 with three RBIs in sparking the Lady Eagles to the 10-7 victory. She singled in the third and sixth innings and homered in the seventh inning.

Other outstanding hitters included Amber Langston who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Izzy Richie was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Amber Stone was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

The win evens out Dawson's district record at 5-5.

Dawson 16 - Pasadena Memorial 11

Dawson avenged an 8-4 loss in the first round to Pasadena Memorial by outlasting the Lady Mavericks 16-11 in a scoring slugfest as each team blasted the other's pitching, and there were 27 total runs and 27 hits during the game. The win keeps the Lady Eagles in the playoff picture.

The Lady Eagles took a 16-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh after scoring seven runs in the top half of the seventh frame. Memorial then scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh before the Lady Eagles finally put out the offensive fireworks to survive 16-11.

Gabrielle Chacon got the win in relief for the Lady Eagles. Chacon pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed eight runs.

The Lady Eagles hit three home runs in the win. Home runs for the Eagles came when Amber Langston homered in the seventh inning and Chacon homered in the third and seventh innings.

Dawson is now 6-5 in league action and 12-10 overall. The Lady Eagles will travel to Manvel on Friday, April 10 in a crucial showdown for the playoffs.
