Dawson falls to George Ranch and Brazoswood
April 11, 2017
PEARLAND — Hoping to avenge 1-0 losses each to George Ranch and Brazoswood in the first round of District 23-6A action didn't happen as the Lady Eagles fell 3-0 to Ranch and 7-4 to Brazoswood to drop to 4-3 in league play.
Despite the two losses, Dawson has still clinched fourth place in the district standings which will send them to the post-season.
In the loss to Ranch, the Lady Eagles gave up two runs in the bottom of the second and then the Lady Longhorns scored an insurance run in the sixth to get the 3-0 win.
Sophomore pitcher Courtney Day took the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits. Day struck out one and walked three.
Dawson managed only five hits with Day going 3-for-3 and Alexis Zarate going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Brazoswood 7 - Dawson 4
Facing Brazoswood, who is in a first-place tie with Pearland, was going to be a challenge since the Lady Eagles came up short 1-0 in the first round.
Getting a win would have been nice, but the Lady Eagles still have punched their ticket to the playoffs.
The win left Brazoswood tied with Pearland at 7-1 with both teams still to face one another in the second round. The Lady Oilers took the first round contest 6-4.
Dawson jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Amber Langston walked, Courtney Day singled, and Kyra Lunford bunted the runners up a base setting up a two-run single by Izzy Richey and a miscue by Brazoswood that allowed both runners to score.
Brazoswood answered in the third with one run to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Lady Bucs would take the lead in the fifth when Morgan Smith lined a single to left and sister Megan Smith smashed a single to right putting two runners on base for Brazoswood's top hitter Kimber Cortemelia who crushed a 3-2 pitch over the left centerfield wall for a three-run homer and a 4-2 advantage.
But the Lady Eagles didn't let that faze them as they tied up the game in the fifth inning.
Alexis Zarate led of the fifth with a walk and Day smashed a double putting both runners in scoring position. Richey then hit a two-out grounder to third, but a throwing error allowed both runners to cross the pay station to knot up the game 4-4.
Brazoswood added two more runs on a single and a pair of doubles to go back ahead 6-4 in the sixth.
The Lady Bucs added one more run in the seventh on three walks and a single making the score 7-4.
Dawson got a leadoff single by Langston in their final at-bats, but the Brazoswood defense stiffened to shut down the Lady Eagles to preserve the 7-4 win.
"Honestly, I feel better about this game than the last time we played them," Dawson head coach Katelyn Welch said. "We hit the ball a little better, and the overall tempo of the game was better.
"The score, to me, doesn't indicate how good of a game it was."
Day was 4-for-4 at the plate while pitching seven innings and giving up seven runs, 11 hits, five strikeouts, and five walks.
Langston was 1-for-3 with one run scored. Richey was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Gabrielle Chacon was 2-for-3.
