Lady Eagles split final two league games

PEARLAND — With four district games remaining on their schedule and sitting alone at the top of the league leaderboard, head coach David McCorkle didn't plan on seeing his girls drop two of the four remaining games. Unfortunately, the Lady Eagles fell to Goose Creek Memorial and Friendswood leaving them with a 11-3 mark to finish in second place behind Santa Fe who claimed the District 24-4A title.

Dawson fell to Friendswood last week 7-5 as the Lady Eagles allowed the Lady Mustangs to score three runs in the top of the seventh. With the score tied 4-4 entering the final frame, Friendswood took advantage of four hits, one error, and one walk to score three runs for a 7-4 lead.

The Lady Eagles could only manage one run in their half of the seventh for the 7-5 loss.

Dawson scored a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Rylee Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead.

Friendswood added a run in the top of the third when Ashley Elliot doubled and scored on a single to centerfield by Olivia Jackson to tie up the game at 1-1.

The Lady Mustangs added two more runs in the top of the fourth as Elliot singled home Angela Fancett, who opened the frame with a single, and Mary Gavin hit a one-out grounder with the bases loaded at shortstop allowing Ashley Adkins to score for a 3-1 lead.

Dawson got a run back in the fifth when Megan Stone singled and Baylee Malone, who had earlier singled, scored on an error by the second baseman to close the gap to 3-2.

The Lady Eagles tied up the game at 3-3 after Niki Turner hit a two-out single and scored on a triple by Amber Langston.

But Friendswood took back the lead 4-3 when Courtney Weber blasted a solo home run in the top of the sixth.

However, Dawson tied up the game 4-4 in their half of the sixth when Ashley Langston reached base on an error and scored on a ground out.

Dawson pounded out 14 hits against the Lady Mustangs, but couldn't overcome the final inning rally by Friendswood.

Friendswood finished with nine hits off Megan Stone while scoring seven runs, with three earned. Stone struck out one hitter and walked three.

Courtney Weber got the win for the Lady Mustangs after allowing 14 hits, four earned runs with three strikeouts.

Leading hitters for Friendswood included Weber, who helped her own cause, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Angela Fancett was 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Elliot was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Brittany Woods was 1-for-4 with one run scored.

Leading hitters for Dawson included Amber Langston who was 3-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.  Ashley Langston was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Dawson closed out the regular season with a 11-1 lopsided win over Ball High.

The Lady Eagles will enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed from District 24-4A. Dawson will face the Foster Lady Falcons in a best-of-three series. The two teams will face off at Foster on Thursday, April 24 at 6:00 p.m. The second game will be at Dawson on Friday, April 25 at 6:00 p.m. A third game (if necessary) will be on Saturday, April 26 at Dawson at 1:00 p.m.
