Dawson boys finish third at 6A Region III track meet


PEARLAND — The Dawson Eagles placed third with 64 points at the Class 6A Region III track meet to finish behind defending state champion Manvel who scored 79 points and Houston Strake Jesuit who finished just in front of the Eagles with 65 points.

The Eagles foursome of Kameron Hypolite, Mykul Mitchell, Frederick Lewis, and Vincent Fisher won the 1600-meter relay in 3:13.56 to advance to the state track meet on May 12-13 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas at Austin campus.

Hypolite also qualified for the state meet after winning the long jump with a leap of 24-3 1/2.

Hypolite is the son of Vincent Hypolite, who as a La Marque athlete, won the state long jump title in 1990 by sailing 25-2 1/4. The elder Hypolite is a former coach at Pearland High School and Dawson High School. He is now at Texas City.

Matthew Murray also qualified for the state meet after finishing second in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:18.14.

Dawson's quartet of Fisher, Mitchell, Christian Hamberlin, and Lewis will also be at state after finishing second in the 400 meter relay with a time of 40.86 which was just behind region winner Manvel at 40.55.

The Dawson Lady Eagles will have one girl advancing to state.

Paige Kimble finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.49.
