PEARLAND — The Dawson Lady Eagles finish 10th as a team at the Class 6A Region III 6A track meet and had only one to advance to the state track meet in Austin.
Taylar Prier won the triple jump with a career best jump of 39 feet-0.5 inches to claim the regional championship.
Prier finished third in the long jump by posting a jump of 18 feet-8.5 inches. The top two athletes automatically qualify for the UIL state meet in each event, plus the next best mark from all the regional meets also qualifies that athlete. Prier claimed that mark and will be entering the state meet with the fourth best mark in the long jump and the second best mark in the triple jump.
Prier qualified for the UIL state championships in two events and is the first Dawson track and field athlete (male or female) to qualify in two individual events.
Also scoring for the Lady Eagles was sophomore Abbie Harrelson who finished fourth in the mile and fifth in the 800 meters. She was the leading scorer for Dawson the entire year. Harrelson came up just a little short in her two events in her effort to advance to the state track meet.
Prier will compete in two weeks in Austin at the UIL championships. Prier will jump on Saturday, May 16 at 12:00 noon for the triple jump and at 4:00 p.m. for the long jump.
