Lady Eagles blast Stratford 14-3

PEARLAND — Most coaches prefer a best-of-three series in the playoffs, but there are times when a team is faced with a one and done situation. Such was the case with the Dawson Lady Eagles who faced the Stratford Lady Spartans.

Sometimes a coach, when facing a talented team, would rather take the one-game option and hope the team can pull out an upset.

That strategy didn't work for Stratford as Dawson accepted the challenge and came away with a 14-3 thrashing to end the season for the Lady Spartans.

The top five hitters for Dawson did the majority of the damage as Baylee Malone, Niki Turner, Jillian Guse, Rylee Rodriguez, and Rose Sullivan went a combined 10-of-17 at the plate that produced nine runs and 11 RBIs.

The Lady Eagles also pounded out four home runs including two by Rodriguez in the third and sixth innings; one by Megan Stone in the fourth frame, and one by Malone in the sixth.

Dawson got on the board early when Turner smashed a bases-loaded 0-2 pitch to clear the deck for a quick 3-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles added another run in the bottom of the third on a solo roundtripper by Rodriguez making the score 4-0.

Stratford finally picked up some offense in the top of the fourth by scoring a pair of runs to cut the lead to 4-2, but Dawson answered with a solo homer by Stone in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-2 advantage.

The Lady Spartans added another run in the top of the fifth, but the Lady Eagles pushed across a pair in their half of the fifth for a 7-3 lead.

Dawson closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth as Stratford's wheels came off when the Lady Eagles soared for seven runs to end the game with the 10-run mercy rule 14-3.

Rodriguez hit a three-run shot to increase the lead to 10-3 and Malone put the finishing touches on the game with a grandslam home run to push the game to a 14-3 end.

Malone was 1-for-3 with one run scored and four RBIs. Turner was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Guse was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Sullivan was 2-for-3 including a double and three runs scored. Amber Langston was 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

Stone helped her own pitching cause going 1-for-2 with a solo home run. She allowed three runs, nine hits, walked three, and struck out three to pick up the win.

Dawson will face the Ridge Point Lady Panthers on Friday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Manvel High School in a one-game showdown.
