Dawson rallies to take series over Summer Creek

PEARLAND DAWSON — The best-of-three series for Dawson and Summer Creek proved to be good for the Lady Eagles in helping them prepare for the tougher road that lies ahead for them in the post-season.

Senior pitcher Courtney Day proved to one of the big difference makers in leading the Lady Eagles to the Class 6A Region III quarterfinals. Over the three game series, Day was 6-of-13 at the plate with two runs scored, four RBIs, and two home runs including an eighth inning walkoff homer that gave Dawson a 7-6 win in the series opener. Day also picked up two of the wins in the pitching circle including 13 strikeouts in game one.

But Summer Creek wasn't going to go away as they took the second game 8-6 to send the series to a third and final game to see which team would continue their journey in the playoffs.

In the third and deciding game, Dawson took an early 1-0 when Courtney Day opened up the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run over the centerfield.

The Lady Eagles then opened up the game with four runs in the third sparked by a Peyton Ellerman two-run single and two-run homer by Olivia Johnson to increase the lead to 5-0.

Dawson increased the lead to 6-0 in the fourth.

Summer Creek finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth the margin to 6-1, but Dawson put the finishing touches on the game with one more run in the sixth to secure the 7-1 victory.

Day was also the winning pitcher, working all seven innings and striking out three while limiting the powerful hitting Lady Bulldogs to six hits.

Dawson (19-9) managed to pound out nine hits for seven runs in the third game. Ellerman led the way going 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBIs. Courtney Day was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
