Winnegan advances to state track meet

PEARLAND — Dawson running back Brett Winnegan will be making his second straight appearance at the 2015 Class 6A state track meet to be held on the University of Texas campus at the Michael A. Myers Track Complex on Saturday, May 23 in Austin at 2:00 p.m.

Winnegan recently won the 6A Region III boys’ long jump at 23 feet, nine inches and is considered one of the top long jumpers in the state. Winnegan won the silver medal last year as a junior for his second place at the state 5A track meet.

He was ranked No. 1 nationally in his class among long jumpers and secretly harbors dreams of qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro.

“If I can’t qualify for the Olympic Team in 2016, I can’t see waiting another four years,” Winnegan said. “That would be the end of the dream.”

Winnegan will attend the University of Texas at San Antonio on a football scholarship and will also compete on the track team.
