Dawson Football Booster Club announces scholarship winners

PEARLAND DAWSON — Each school year, the Dawson Football Booster Club gives $10,000 in scholarship money to deserving senior players. The scholarship money is provided from a couple of sources.

Bayway Chevrolet is a big scholarship provider as part of their sponsorship of the PearBowl that features the game between the Dawson Eagles and cross-town cousin Pearland Oilers.

Also, the ads of area businesses that support the award-winning Dawson football media guide. Area businesses provide ads in the full-color publication that is sold at each home game and 100 percent of the ad money goes to the Dawson Football Booster Club and this scholarship effort.

In order to receive a scholarship, the players must meet certain criteria that qualifies them for the scholarships. The players must have been in the Dawson football program all four years in high school unless they transferred in from another school. They must also write a 300 word (minimum) essay entitled, "Life lessons learned while playing football for the Dawson Eagles."

Each player's essay is read and judged by outside community leaders who do not know the name of the player nor do they have a player on the team. Each player is identified by the last four digits of his social security and the judges give a number grade for each essay.

The three judges read all the essays, the three grades are averaged out and the players receive a scholarship amount based on their grade.

This year, the following senior players received scholarships to continue their education at the next level with the amount awarded to each.

They are: Michael Bogue ($2,200), Quentin Sykes ($2,000), Ian Atkins ($1,800), Aaron Gadson ($1,500), Isaias Garza ($1,250), Michael Boudreaux ($1,250).
