Dawson a pre-season pick to finish fourth in 23-6A race

PEARLAND DAWSON — Dawson head coach Mike Allison begins his second season at the helm of the Dawson Eagles football program and his team is picked to make the post-season as a fourth-place team in the District 23-6A title race.

The Eagles finished fourth last year with a 4-3 district mark and closed with a 6-5 record in 2018. They fell to Clear Lake 28-14 in the opening round of the playoffs.

Pearland is picked to repeat as 23-6A champions while Houston Strake Jesuit and Alief Hastings are selected to finish in second and third place respectively ahead of Dawson.

The other teams picked to finish behind Dawson include Richmond George Ranch, Alief Taylor, Alief Elsik, and Clute Brazoswood.

There are some teams on the outside of the top four teams that are capable of pulling off an upset to slide into playoff contention.

Dawson began varsity competition in 2008 and have never missed the playoffs and have never had a losing season.

Despite losing some key players to graduation, Allison is confident that his team will be very competitive this season.

The Eagles return six offensive and five defensive starters along with 18 lettermen competing for a starting position.

One of the big concerns for Allison is who will replace quarterback Patrick Kramer, but the veteran coach believes he has found a replacement in Myles Kitt-Denton (6-0, 170) who moves from his wide receiver position to the quarterback slot.

Kitt-Denton showed during spring practice that he will be a duel-threat signal-caller as he can throw and run.

Anchoring the offensively line will be senior offensive tackle Calib Perez (6-6, 280) who just committed to Duke University.

Others to watch on offense will be RB Bobby Wooden (5-11, 165), RB Ja'Den Stewart (6-0, 190) who had 577 yards rushing and nine touchdowns, WR Alex Boudreaux, and OL Javon Brown.

Defensively, the Eagles look to be strong with several experienced players to lead that side of the ball.

DB Blake Smith looks to be one of the main defensive leader after had 96 tackles and four INTs last season.

Also leading the way will be LB Darrien Flynn (5-11, 180), DB David Fisher (5-10, 145), DL Cameron Whitfield (6-1, 215), DE Devon Benson, DB Justin Ray, and DB JayRon Tanner.

Dawson will also look to sophomore placekicker Carter Brown to provide some clutch offense in a close game. Brown had three field goals last season and he should be experienced in a game-winning situation.
