Dawson stumbles to George Ranch 42-25

PEARLAND — The Dawson Eagles were seeking to avenge last year's loss to the Richmond George Ranch Longhorns and it appeared that the Eagles were on track to do just that after the first half.

Dawson built an 18-8 lead after two quarters, but there is a second half to be played and the No. 6 Class 5A state-ranked Longhorns completely took over the next 24 minutes and outscored Dawson 34-7 to get the 42-25 non-district victory.

Mistakes caught up with the Eagles as they suffered two lost fumbles and four pass interceptions with one of those picks going for a 64-yard touchdown by Adam Beck of George Ranch after after being tipped by Dawson's wide receiver.

Saevion Johnson put Dawson on the scoreboard with a 2-yard run with 7:12 left in the opening period. Kaleb White ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

Dawson scored again before the first quarter was over on a 24-yard field goal by Marek Biczynski at the 2:07 mark.

George Ranch scored on the first play of the second quarter when Darius Anderson scored the first of his four touchdowns with 11:53 left on a 1-yard plunge to cut the lead to 11-8 after a successful two-point conversion.

After Dawson brought out the kickoff to their own 23, Kaleb White got behind the Longhorn defense and hauled in a 77-yard scoring bomb from the arm of quarterback Zach Smith giving the Eagles an 18-8 advantage for the rest of the first half.

The second half belonged to the Longhorns. After George Ranch scored the only touchdown of the third quarter to cut the lead to 18-15, the Longhorns reeled off 20 straight points on the shoulders of running back Anderson who scored on runs of 1, 1, and 25 yards with a 27-yard fumble recovery for a score sandwiched in between giving the Horns a 35-18 lead.

Dawson finally scored with 5:53 left in the fourth quarter on a 48-yard pass from Smith to Brailon Mouton to get the Eagles to within 35-25.

The Longhorns put the game away with the 64-yard pass interception to post the 42-25 final score.

Dawson outgained the Longhorns 405-238, but the miscues were all that George Ranch needed to get control.

Smith was 15-of-33 passing for 270 yards and a pair of TDs, but he was hampered by the four interceptions.

Johnson was the leading ball carrier with 12 carries for 97 yards and one score. Mouton had five catches for 123 yards and one score. White had six grabs for 97 yards and one TD.

Anderson had 169 yards on 27 carries and four TDs to lead the Longhorns.
