Defense shines as Dawson takes out Dobie 51-36
September 19, 2024
The major difference was the Dawson defense as they had nine take aways with five interceptions and four fumble recoveries to literally steal victory out of the jaws of defeat.
It looked like Dawson would run away with the game as they led 24-7 at intermission, but the Longhorns came out in the second half with a renewed zeal to close the gap to 24-21 with two quick scores in the third quarter.
From that point in the game, it was going to be a back-and-forth battle as the Eagles took scoring opportunities away from the Longhorns thanks to key turnovers by the Dawson defense.
On their fourth possession of the third quarter, Dawson found the endzone when QB Max Zavala fired a 24-yard scoring strike to Josiah McFarland to make the score 31-21 following the PAT by Ayden Treadaway with 3:49 remaining in the third.
After the Dawson defense forced Dobie to punt, the Eagles went on a 6-play, 61-yard scoring drive capped off by a 1-yard plunge by RB Corey Brown. The PAT was no good on a bad snap leaving the Eagles with a 37-21 lead.
Both teams scored twice in the final period as Dobie was not going away as they scored on two long runs covering 62-yards and 50-yards.
Dawson countered with a long run of their own when Brown scored on a 50-yard scoring jaunt while Brown put the dagger in Dobie with a 14-yard scoring dash to post the final 51-36 score.
But it was the defense that saved the game as the Eagles had four interceptions and five fumble recoveries that stymied the Dobie offense.
The Eagles scored three touchdowns in the first half as Zavala throws a 41-yard scoring strike to Brown, Jerimiah Treadaway scores on a 23-yard run, and Luke Brown scores on a 1-yard plunge while Ayden Treadaway boots a 47-yard field goal. He also hit 6-of-6 PAT's.
Zavala was 17-of-28 passing for 234 yards and two TDs.
Jeremiah Treadaway led the ground attack with 15 carries for 139 yards and one score while he had plenty of support from Corey Brown (7 totes, 112 yards, 3 TDs) and Luke Brown (7 carries, 60 yards, 1 TD).
Brown also was the leading receiver with 8 catches for 136 yards and one TD. Kaden Dillard had four grabs for 52 yards while Chase Davis had three grabs for 30 yards.
Dawson will travel to Pasadena Memorial Stadium on Thursday, September 19 to face Pasadena Memorial at 6:30 p.m.
