Dawson flies past Pasadena Memorial 63-7


PEARLAND — Dawson junior quarterback Zach Smith tied a team record with five touchdown passes to lead the Eagles past the Pasadena Memorial Mavericks 63-7 to improve to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in the district.

The win sets up the head-to-head showdown with cross-town Pearland on Friday, October 2 in the 2nd annual Strickland Chevrolet Dawson-Pearland Bowl at 7:00 p.m. at The Rig. Dawson will be the home team in this year's contest which should be a sellout as the No. 9 state-ranked Oilers enter the game at 5-0.

The Oilers won the first-ever meeting between the two schools last year 15-6 which came down to the end before being decided. Fans can expect to see another challenging game this season as the teams are a combined 9-1.

Both teams are tied for first place with Manvel in the District 22-6A standings and the winner will move closer to competing for the district crown this year. Both teams should have no problem advancing to the playoffs.

Dawson took care of business against Pasadena Memorial as the offense and defense are competing at a high performance level.

Smith was had a record-setting night hitting 13-of-16 passing for 167 yards and five TDs. He also had eight carries for 76 yards rushing and another score.

The Eagles scored twice in the opening period when Drake Rainer scored on a 1-yard run and Brailon Mouton caught a 14-yard scoring pass from Smith for a 14-0 lead.

Dawson continued to dominate on offense as they blew the game open with 28 points in the second quarter as Kaleb White scored twice on a 33-yard and a 29-yard pass from Smith.

Mouton caught his second touchdown pass from Smith covering 14-yards and RB Saevion Johnson scored on a 3-yard burst for a 42-yard halftime lead.

Dawson scored two more times in the third when White caught another pass from Smith for a TD covering 14-yards and Lance Charles added a 12-yard scoring dash to push the Dawson lead to 56-0.

Memorial finally got on the scoreboard with :47 left in the third on a 38-yard scoring pass to make the score 56-7.

The Eagles closed out the scoring with 6:14 left in the game as Chase Thibodeaux scored on a 1-yard run. Marek Biczynski added his ninth PAT of the game to post the final 63-7 score.

Johnson led all rushers with 13 carries for 116 yards and one TD. Jacoby Carr had seven totes for 94 yards. Charles had nine carries for 63 yards and one score. Thibodeaux had six carries for 34 yards and a TD.

Mouton had five catches for 60 yards and two TDs. White had four grabs for 79 yards and three scores.

As a reminder, Pearland High School season ticket holders will need to purchase a ticket for the Dawson-Pearland game as the Oilers are considered the visiting team.
