Big plays lead Dawson to win over Brazoswood 35-19

PEARLAND — Dawson is known for their speed and the ability to make big plays which the Eagles needed to take out the Brazoswood Buccaneers 35-19 ruining the Homecoming celebration in Freeport.

Brazoswood is now 3-4 overall and 0-3 in district leaving them in the cellar of the playoff race while Dawson improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.

Dawson senior quarterback Zach Smith played a huge role in Dawson's first half fortunes as he threw three scoring strikes as the Eagles took a 28-9 lead into the dressing room at intermission.

Smith's first touchdown pass came with 3:17 left in the first quarter when he hit Osby Mitchell for a 35-yard TD. Claire Jeffries nailed the PAT for a 7-0 lead.

The next score for Dawson came when running back Lance Charles scored on a 1-yard blast for a 14-0 lead at the close of the opening period.

Early in the second quarter, Niko Thomas got behind the Brazoswood defense with a sensational 72-yard connection from Smith for a 21-0 lead at the 10:31 mark.

Brazoswood finally was able to cross the pay station when Nathan Trevino scored on a 2-yard run to cut the margin to 21-6 after the PAT bounced off the goal post.

The touchdown was set up by an interception by Eric Aguilar who picked off Smith and returned the ball to the Dawson 3.

It took just a little over a minute for Smith and Thomas to hookup again, this time on a 23-yard scoring toss to increase the lead to 28-6 with 5:35 left before halftime.

The Bucs weren't going down easy as they settled for a 37-yard field goal by Kenneth Alemendares with only 3 seconds left before halftime leaving the score 28-9 in favor of Dawson.

The game got a little uneasy for Dawson as Brazoswood's defense dominated the second half as Dawson was able to get only 94 yards in the final two quarters after posting 352 total yards in the first half.

Brazoswood used a 66-yard pass interception by Jackson Miller for a score and another field goal of 43-yards by Alemendares to close the gap to 28-19 with 9:22 left in the fourth quarter to give the Brazoswood fans some hope.

But Dawson put the game away when Darrius Smith scored on a 5-yard run to increase the lead to 35-19 with only 1:42 left in the contest.

Smith led the offense with 12-of-23 passing for 236 yards and three touchdowns.

Darrius Smith was the workhorse on the ground with 11 carries for 104 yards and a TD. Charles had 13 carries for 93 yards and a score.

Thomas had three catches for 100 yards and a TD while Mitchell had four grabs for 65 yards and a TD. Mason Pierce had four receptions for 68 yards.

Dawson's defense allowed Brazoswood only 153 total yards including only 57 passing yards on 3-for-11.

Dawson will face Pearland in the 3rd Annual Strickland Chevrolet Dawson-Pearland Bowl on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:00 p.m. at The Rig.
