Dawson topples Brazoswood 41-6

PEARLAND DAWSON — Brazoswood came to The Rig without a win on the season to face District 23-6A leading Dawson and that's the way the Eagles sent them home.

Dawson let Brazoswood know they weren't going to have a let down after beating the Pearland Oilers 40-29 the previous week.

In fact, it took only two plays for the Eagles to score after they returned the opening kickoff to the Brazoswood 40.

After losing three yards on the first play, Dawson backup quarterback and all-around athlete Blake Smith rolled out to his right, found a gap, and used his speed to race past the Buccaneer defenders for a 43-yard touchdown. Carter Brown hit the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 11:02 left in the first quarter.

The Bucs fumbled on the second play of their first possession which was recovered by Dawson for a safety and a 9-0 lead at the 10:29 mark of the first period.

After Brazoswood was forced to punt, Dawson began at the Bucs 49. It took Dawson only six plays as Ja'Den Stewart got the call and scored on a 7-yard run for a 16-0 lead following the PAT by Brown with 7:23 left in the period.

The Eagles added one more score in the opening period when Stewart got loose on a 44-yard scoring dash with :55 seconds left in the frame for a 23-0 lead.

Dawson's defense continued to control Brazoswood's offense to hold them scoreless in the first half.

The second quarter saw the Eagles score 12 more points as Bobby Wooden scored on an 8-yard touchdown. Brown hit the extra point making the score 30-0 with 10:47 left in the period.

The Eagles got another safety after Anthony Knox blocks a Brazoswood punt that bounced out of the back of the end zone making the score 32-0 at intermission with 8:00 left before halftime.

Brown added three more points before intermission with a 24-yard field goal making the score 35-6.

Brazoswood did score in the second period on a 35-yard interception that was returned for a touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good leaving the score 35-6 at halftime.

Carter Brown added two more field goals in the second half including a new school record 49-yarder and an 18-yard field goal making the final score 41-6 as Dawson played as many players in the blowout.

Dawson (5-1, 3-0) will travel to Traylor Stadium on Friday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. to face the George Ranch Longhorns (3-3, 3-0). Both teams are undefeated in league play and this game could determine who wins the district title.
