Dawson pounces on Brazoswood 50-14

PEARLAND — The Dawson Eagles got their first District 23-6A win in convincing fashion as they beat Brazoswood 50-14. Dawson is now 3-3 overall and 1-2 in district with a critical game this Friday, October 19 at The Rig against George Ranch in a league showdown that will no doubt have playoff implications.

George Ranch is also 3-3, but they are 2-1 in league play so every game for the Eagles is important in looking to the post-season.

Dawson took the opening kickoff and marched down the field to complete a 64-yard, 14-play drive that took almost half of the first quarter for a 6-0 lead as Ja'Den Stewart scored on a 1-yard plunge with 6:27 left in the opening period. The PAT missed the mark.

The Eagles surprise the Buccaneer with an onside kick that they recovered at the Brazoswood 48.

In less than two minutes, Dawson found the end zone again as Mason Pierce scored on a 1-yard run. The two-point attempt came up short leaving the Eagles with a 12-0 lead with 4:39 left in the first quarter.

Brazoswood answered with a 27-yard scoring pass from Lane Caballero to Kevin Brown to cut the margin to 12-7 with :46 seconds left in the period.

On the ensuing kickoff, Dawson failed to field the ball allowing Brazoswood to recover the ball at the Eagle 22. However, Dawson was able to stiffen on defense forcing a 42-yard field goal by the Bucs that missed the mark wide right leaving the Eagles in front 12-7.

Dawson finally got focused and scored four unanswered touchdowns to vault ahead 40-7 at intermission.

Aenas McClure started the scoring spree with a 3-yard run with 7:44 left in the second quarter to increase the lead to 19-7.

Brazoswood turned the ball over with an interception and Dawson scored in two plays as quarterback Patrick Kramer connected with Pierce on a 41-yard bomb to the Bucs one-yard line. Stewart scored on the next play to make the score 26-7 with 5:36 left in the second.

The Bucs turned the ball over again as Blake Smith stole another Caballero pass who returned the ball 34 yards for a touchdown making the score 33-7 at the 2:26 mark.

But Dawson wasn't finished as the haphazard Bucs coughed up the ball deep in their own territory giving the Eagles a short field. Kramer and Pierce hooked up again for a 6-yard scoring toss to make it 40-7 at halftime.

The Eagles padded their lead in the second half when Kramer hooked up with Myles Kitt-Denton on a 33-yard scoring pass with 7:56 left in the third to make the score 47-7.
