Smith leads Dawson past Brazoswood 51-16

PEARLAND — It has been a tough season for Brazoswood as they entered the game against Dawson with a 2-2 record and winless (0-2) in district.

Dawson may have taken Brazoswood for granted in the beginning, especially when the Bucs took advantage of a fumble by the Eagles on the first play of the game.

Brazoswood's Jacques Owens scooped up the ball and raced 25-yards for a touchdown giving the Bucs a 7-0 lead with only 12 seconds gone in the game.

Neither team moved the ball that well in the opening period until Brazoswood drove to the Dawson 27 before settling on a 44-yard field goal with 2:43 left in the opening stanza and a 10-0 advantage.

Dawson finally got on the board with 12 seconds left in the first quarter as running back Darrius Smith scored his first of five touchdowns on a 3-yard run to cut the lead to 10-7.

Smith was the workhorse of the 75-yard, 8-play drive as he had six carries for 62 yards including a 36-yard run.

With 6:44 left before halftime, the Eagles set up their offense on the Bucs 19 thanks to a seven-yard punt on fourth down by Brazoswood.

Four plays later Smith found the goal line again on a 9-yard run for a 14-10 lead with 5:56 left in the first half.

But the Bucs weren't going to go away as they began a drive at their own 12 and moved the ball to the Dawson 1 in eight plays thanks to a 69-yard pass completion to the Eagles 21.

A.J. Casas scored on a 1-yard plunge giving the Bucs the lead again 16-14 following a missed PAT.

However, the lead lasted just 32 seconds as Smith found a huge hole in the Brazoswood defense and sped 66-yards for the score and a 21-16 lead with 1:41 left before intermission.

The second half belonged to the Eagles as they outscored their Homecoming opponents 30-0 to stay undefeated in league play.

Smith added two more scores in the third quarter on runs of 2 and 13 yards to increase the lead to 35-16.

With 1:13 left in the third, Eagle quarterback found Khalil Jones open for a 55-yard scoring bomb for a 42-16 advantage.

The Eagles added nine more points in the fourth frame on a Perry Smith 35-yard field goal and with less than a minute in the contest Aeneas McClure scored on a 69-yard cross country run to post the 51-16 final score.

Dawson placekicker Claire Jeffress booted seven extra points in the game while also trading in her helmet at halftime time for a crown as she was named the 2017 Dawson Homecoming Queen to the delight of the crowd.

Smith led all ball carriers with 186 yards rushing and scored on runs of 3, 9, 66, 2 and 13 yards.

Dawson will host Pearland in the annual PearBowl on Friday, Oct. 20 at The Rig at 7:00 p.m. The game is sold out and should be quite a contest as both teams are undefeated in district.
