Dawson pounds Alief Taylor 39-0 to remain unbeaten

PEARLAND DAWSON — The game was a picture of total domination on both sides of the ball as the Dawson Eagles shutout the Alief Taylor Lions 39-0 to improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in district.

The Lions had no roar as they presented no threat to the well-coached Eagles.

Earlier in the week, Dawson Defensive Coordinator Tre Grimes was voted BUILT with Chocolate Milk "Coach of the Week" and his defensive squad showed why as Taylor was able to get only 98 total yards for the game.

Dawson limited the Lions to three first downs, 76 yards rushing, and an anemic 22 yards through the air (6-of-13 passing) while defensive back David Fisher got an interceptions for the Eagles.

Meanwhile, the Dawson offense had a strong showing as they registered 22 first downs and 336 yards of total offense (248 rushing, 88 passing) while scoring four touchdowns.

The Eagles also used their other weapon, All-State junior placekicker Carter Brown, who booted three field goals (29, 34, and 23-yards; and four PATs) for a total of 13 of the 39 points.

Dawson scored the first touchdown of the game when senior running back Torrence Burgess swept the left side for a 9-yard touchdown. Brown added the PAT and the Eagles were in front 7-0 with 6:06 left in the opening quarter.

The Eagles defense scored next on a two-point safety after pinning the Lions on their own one-yard line thanks to a booming punt by Brown. Dawson now had a 9-0 lead early in the second period.

With 9:12 left in the first half, Dawson went on a seven-play 51-yard drive capped off by a 13-yard run by senior running back Ja'Den Stewart. Carter hit the PAT and the lead was 16-0.

Dawson closed out the opening two quarters with a 19-0 advantage thanks to a 29-yard field goal by Brown.

It was all Dawson in the second half as the Eagles scored 20 unanswered points as Brown booted two more field goals while Burgess scored on a 22-yard run and Stewart found paydirt on an 11-yard run to post the 39-0 final score and to improve to 5-0 for the 2020 season and 3-0 in league play.

Sophomore QB Colin Johnson was 8-of-15 passing for 88-yards.

Stewart was the workhorse on the ground with 16 carries for 106-yards and two scores.

Burgess had five carries for 31-yards and two TDs while Eli Webster had two carries for 45 yards.

Ashton Stroman had three grabs for 57 yards and Hayden Curry had two catches for 28 yards.

Dawson sits atop the District 23-6A standings and will host the Strake Jesuit Crusaders on Friday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Pearland ISD Stadium.
