Dawson flies past Strake Jesuit 50-7

PEARLAND DAWSON — The game between Dawson and Strake Jesuit was expected to be a close one, but the Eagles took control early and never looked back with the 50-7 dominating district win to stay perfect on the season at 6-0.

Dawson opened the game with a three-and-out on offense and then punted to Strake Jesuit who began their first possession on their own 46.

It took only four plays for the Crusaders to find paydirt as QB Connor O'Hara hit WR Robert Smith on a 12-yard slant for the score. The PAT was good for a 7-0 lead with 8:34 left in the first quarter.

Little did Strake Jesuit know that they would never cross the Dawson goal line again for the rest of the game as the Eagles would score 50 unanswered points.

With 6:37 left in the opening period, Dawson's Blake Smith recovered a fumble to set up the Eagles at the Crusaders 24.

It took only four plays for Dawson to tie up the game as senior RB Ja'Den Stewart rammed his way into the end zone on a 4-yard run with 5:17 left in the quarter. Junior placekicker Carter Brown booted the PAT making the score 7-7.

Dawson would score again in the second quarter on a 57-yard, seven-play drive capped off with a 16-yard touchdown pass from sophomore QB Colin Johnson to senior WR Raynard Allen with 7:53 left in the frame for a 14-7 advantage.

The Eagles forced a quick three-and-out and took possession at the Strake 45.

It took less than two minutes for Dawson to score as they completed the 45-yard drive in four plays as Torrence Burgess scored on a 1-yard plunge. The PAT was blocked leaving the score at 20-7.

After the two teams traded interceptions, the Eagles got a two-point safety for a 22-7 lead that stood at halftime.

The Dawson defense did an outstanding job in keeping the Crusaders out of the end zone in the second half while the Eagle offense tacked on 28 more points.

Scoring for the Eagles in the second half included Stewart on a 6-yard run, Burgess on a 16-yard TD, Ruel Hampton on a 3-yard scoring run, and Robert Johnson capped off the scoring with a 3-yard burst across the goal line to post the 50-7 final score.

Dawson limited the Crusaders to 247 total yards while the Eagles got 423 total yards.

Smith and Jordan Stewart each got an interception against Strake.

Johnson was 15-of-23 passing for 162 yards and one TD and one INT.
