BAYTOWN — The No. 1 state-ranked Dawson Eagles flexed their muscles and turned the Ball High Tornadoes into a mere breeze with a 56-0 spanking to capture the District 24-4A championship.
The once proud and storied Ball High football program is only a remnant of what they used to be and over the past three years have become easy prey by area teams.
The Tors entered the season with a 19-game losing streak and La Marque beat them in the season opener to increase that count to 20 games. The Tors finally snapped that losing streak with a win over Houston KIPP Sunnyside. The only league win they have came against winless Santa Fe 21-13.
Dawson could have beaten the Tors by any score they wanted, but Eric Wells isn't into humiliated a team, especially on their own turf. That's just part of the integrity and character that Wells and his coaching staff exhibit while making sure they take care of business with respect to their opponent.
Dawon registered 440 total yards while Ball High managed only 156 total yards.
Once again, Dawson running back James White emerged as one of the stars after picking up 244 yards on only 14 carries (17.4 per carry) and four touchdowns. White scored on runs of 10, 70, 14, and 64 yards to help lead the Eagles to a 35-0 halftime score.
Neither team scored in the opening 12 minutes, but it was the James White show in the second period as he scored on 10 and 70-yard runs with the latter coming at the 7:32 mark.
Adrian Reed picked up a Ball High fumble less than a minute later to score on a 35-yard fumble recovery to make the score 21-0 with 6:45 left before intermission.
But the Eagles were finished as Colby Tahan got behind the Tors secondary and hauled in a perfect pass from QB Josh Sharp to complet a 27-yard scoring toss for a 28-0 advantage.
Brett Winnegan added one more score before halftime on a 10-yard run. Jacob Hood added his fifth PAT of the opening half for the 35-0 lead.
White picked up where he left off in the first half by scoring two more times on a 14 and 64-yard jaunt to run the score to 49-0.
With 4:27 left in the contest, Shawn McDuffie scored on a 19-yard scamper to post the 56-0 final score.
Sharp hit 5-of-8 passing for 70 yards and one score and one INT.
Trahan had one catch for 27 yards and one TD. Corstain Hill had two grabs for 27 yards while Jordan Williams had one catch for 12 yards.
Dawson is now 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in league action. The Eagles will host Galena Park at The Rig on Friday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the regular season finale.
