Dawson takes care of Alvin to advance to post-season

DAWSON — The Dawson Eagles had already punched their ticket to the playoffs before facing Alvin, but head coach Mike Allison wanted to continue the momentum the Eagles had established. Dawson beat Alvin 42-20 to end the 2022 regular season with a 6-4 mark and 6-1 in district.

Dawson will face the Clear Falls Knights (8-2) on Friday, November 11 at 7:00 p.m. at CCISD Veterans Memorial Stadium in League City.

For the 13th straight year, the Eagles will advance to the post-season as well has having never had a losing season since Dawson opened in 2007.

The game started out with a bang for Dawson as the Eagles scored on the second play of the game. QB Colin Johnson found an opening in the Alvin defense and raced 32-yards untouched to the end zone to give Dawson a 7-0 lead with only 15 seconds gone in the game.

The Eagles followed that play with an on-side kick that was recovered by Dawson at the Alvin 49.

Dawson went on a 7-play, 49-yard drive that was capped off with a 13-yard scoring dash by Bryce Burgess. Ayden Treadaway added his second PAT and the Eagles had a 14-0 advantage at the 9:27 mark of the opening period.

Alvin finally got their first possession of the game and scored on a 12-yard run by Dayshawn Peterson. The PAT was good and the Yellowjackets closed the gap to 14-7 with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter.

The Yellowjackets returned the favor as they recovered the on-side kick at the Dawson 41. Four plays later and Peterson found the end zone again, this time on a 31-yard run with 1:45 left in the explosive first quarter. The Jackets missed the PAT leaving the Eagles with a 14-13 lead.

Dawson would take control of the game by adding three more scores before the end of the first half.

Bryce Burgess would sprint to the goal line on a 22-yard scoring run to cap off a 91-yard, 9-play drive with 10:29 left in the second period for a 21-13 lead.

Following an Alvin punt, the Eagles would begin their next scoring drive at the Alvin 40. It would take only five plays to find the pay station as Johson hit Joseph Brown on a 23-yard scoring strike to make the score 28-13 with 5:35 left in the second quarter.

The final score of the first half came on a scoring pass from Johnson to Braylon Howard covering 12-yards with 1:04 remaining before intermission to make the score 35-13.

Each team would score in the second half as Dawson scored on a pass from Johnson to Josh Gillis-Henry for a 24-yard touchdown to make the score 42-13 with 3:06 left in the third quarter.

Alvin scored with 10:00 left in the fourth quarter to close the gap to 42-20 which would stand as the final score.

Johnson was 11-of-16 passing for 153 yards and three scores while rushing for 29 yards on four carries and one TD.

Bryce Burgess had 11 carries for 119 yards and two TDs.

Gillis-Harry had three catches for 40 yards and a TD; Jaeden McCleskey had two grabs for 26 yards, Brown had one catch for 26 yards and a score, and Gage Greene had one grab for 32 yards.
