Clear Lake gets past Dawson 28-14

PEARLAND DAWSON— It has been a stressful year as they had to win their final game of the regular season to advance to the playoffs.

Their first round opponent also had to battle to make the post-season as Clear Lake has been absent from the playoffs for the past several years while Dawson has been a team that has advanced several rounds each season.

With both teams showing the same 5-5 season mark, the outcome of this game was going to be who made the least mistakes and could come up with a strong offense to pull out the win.

For three quarters, it appeared that Dawson might be the stronger team as they had a 14-7 lead entering the final twelve minutes.

Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to control the offense of the Falcons who scored 21 unanswered points in the final period to escape with a 28-14 bi-district win to move on to the area round of the Class 6A Region III Div. II playoffs.

Clear Lake scored the game's first touchdown on a 10-yard run by Adrian Cavazos for a 7-0 lead with 3:42 left in the opening quarter.

With 3:32 remaining in the second period, Dawson tied up the game on a 6-yard scoring burst by Ja'Den Stewart making the score 7-7 at intermission.

The Eagles took the lead in the third quarter when Mason Pierce caught a 23-yard pass from quarterback Patrick Kramer at the 1:03 mark for a 14-7 lead.

But Clear Lake went on a scoring spree in the final frame as the ground attack was too much for the Dawson defense.

Clear Lake's Brendon Holmes scored twice on runs of 36 and 22-yards while Cavazos added his second score of the game on a 1-yard run with only 1:41 left in the game to nail the door shut and end the season for the Eagles 28-14.

Kramer was 11-of-28 for 127 yards and one TD and one INT.

Bobby Wooden had nine carries for 50 yards while Stewart had 11 totes for 46 yards and one TD.

Pierce had five grabs for 73 yards and one score. Wooden had three grabs for 44 yards.

Dawson closes the 2018 football season with a 5-6 overall mark. This the first time in Dawson varsity football history starting in 2008 that the Eagles have finished with a losing record.
