HOUSTON — Dawson head coach Eric Wells found himself sitting on the stage with the elite players and coaches in the Houston area at the 30th annual Touchdown Club of Houston High School Awards Dinner held at the JW Marriott Hotel.
Over 1,500 attended the gala event advertised as the High School Heisman Trophy of Texas. It is the largest high school event in the nation that honors the top offensive players, defensive players, and coaches in the Houston area.
Though Wells has only been a head coach at the varsity level for two years - the young and winsome coach has Dawson (12-2) positioned to play in the Class 4A Division I state semifinals against top-ranked Lake Travis (14-0) with the winner advancing to the 4A state championship game.
With over 120 schools in the Houston area - Wells was selected as one of 10 finalists for "Coach of the Year" honors.
Cinco Ranch head coach Don Clayton received the John Kelly "Coach of the Year" award as the Cougars are slated to face Abilene in the 5A Division I state semifinals.
Other coaching finalists included: Dean Colbert (Atascocita), Clint Hartman (Clear Springs), David Jones (Cy-Woods), Stan Labay (Klein), Mark Schmid (The Woodlands), John Snelson (Pasadena Memorial), Drew Svoboda (Klein Collins), and Steve Van Meter (Friendswood).
"It was just an honor for me to be selected as a finalist," Wells humbly said. "There were some great coaches on the stage representing many years of successful experience.
"I was only selected because of the hard work of my coaching staff and players. I am also grateful for the support of the Pearland ISD and Dawson administrators, plus the parent support has been incredible."
The "Defensive Player of the Year" selected was Santa Fe linebacker Shane Sobnosky and the "Offensive Player of the Year" was North Shore offensive tackleTrey Hopkins.
