Dawson edges Manvel in OT 74-71

PEARLAND — Dawson and Manvel entered their first-round District 22-6A showdown tied atop the league leaderboard and the game was the anticipated slugfest.

The Eagles began the season as the defending 22-6A champion and it took that kind of effort for Dawson to pull out a hard-fought 74-71 overtime victory.

It looked like Dawson would run away with the contest after getting an 18-8 first quarter lead.

But the Mavericks finally got things going on offense to outscore the visitors 16-14 in the second period to close the gap to 32-24 at intermission.

The second half belong to Manvel as they outscored the Eagles 16-13 in the third and 19-14 in the final frame leaving the game tied at 59-59.

At one point in the game, Dawson built a 14-point lead, but saw that margin slowly evaporate forcing an extra period.

Dawson could have prevailed in regulation had they been a little more focused on their free throws which has always been a struggle in the past.

"We have to make free throws to win close games," Dawson head coach Mark Barre said. "We missed seven or eight in the first half."

The Eagles trailed Manvel 59-57 with only 16 seconds left in the game and on the verge of losing the game, but Jules Moor made two clutch free throws when they really counted to pull Dawson even at 59-all.

Moor continued his clutch shooting as he scored 10 of Dawson's 15 point in overtime including 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.

With 1:46 left in the extra period, Dawson had a 63-61 lead when Moor nailed two quick field goals to give the Eagles a 67-61 cushion.

Manvel's Braxton Lovings stepped up to make two free throws with 21 seconds left to cut the lead to 70-63.

Mo Hussein made three free throws and Jalen Preston got a steal to cut the Dawson margin to 72-68 with six ticks left on the clock.

Manvel quickly fouled Moor who tossed in two pressure free throws to push the lead to 74-68 with five seconds left.

The Mavs got a three-pointer at the buzzer by Linton Acliese to make the final score 74-71.

Dawson was 24-of-37 from the free throw line, but stepped it up to make 13-of-16 in the fourth quarter and OT.

"I knew that 14-point lead didn't mean anything," Barre said. "Manvel is so athletic and they have good players. We held (Jalen) Preston down in the first half, but he got off there in the fourth quarter, and when he gets going, he's pretty good."

Preston finished with 24 points with 20 of them coming in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Dawson has now won back-to-back district games over their two main rivals, Pearland and Manvel.

The Eagles took out the Oilers (2-2) earlier 59-45 and now are 5-0 in district while Manvel falls to 3-1.

Moor led the Eagles in scoring with 26 points while Carl Nicholas tossed in 13 and Carl Tarelton added 12.

Manvel's Acliese had 20 while Yeskin Williams added 10.

Dawson will host Pasadena Dobie on Tuesday, January 5 at 7:00 p.m. and they will travel face the Pasadena Eagles on Friday, January 8 at 7:00 p.m.
