Lady Eagles move into a tie atop district standings

PEARLAND — The first time Dawson faced Brazoswood, the Lady Eagles came up short 2-1 to suffer their only league loss in the first round.

Dawson head coach Katelyn Welch, who played for the Lady Buccaneers and won a state title in 2000, doesn't like to lose to her alma mater.

The second round showdown between Dawson and Brazoswood was a different story as junior pitcher Courtney Day pitched a three-hitter, struck out 10 and homered in leading Dawson to a 5-0 win over the Lady Bucs in a key District 23-6A softball game.

Dawson led 2-0 after one inning and 3-0 after the third. The Lady Eagles also scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings in tying Brazoswood for the district lead.

Katelyn Day had three hits and an RBI for Dawson while teammate Kirsten Williams had two hits and drove in a run. Brooke Toler also aided the Dawson attack with two hits for the 5-0 shutout win.

Dawson 10 - George Ranch 0

For the second time this season, Dawson shutout George Ranch 10-0 to end the game after only five innings.

Once again, Courtney Day was dominating in the pitching circle as she allowed no runs while striking out six batters.

Lady Eagle Kyra Lunford was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Payton Ellerman was 2-for-3 with an RBI while catcher Izzy Richey was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Kirsten Williams had two hits and an RBI while Katelyn Day had one hit and two RBIs.

Dawson will travel to Alief Elsik on Friday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. in a game that should be another lopsided victory for the Lady Eagles.
