Dawson, Pearland tracksters qualify for state track meet

PEARLAND — Dawson speedster Jacolby Shelton and Chrystal Herpin punched their ticket to the Class 6A state track meet that will be held on May 11-12 at the Michael A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Shelton won the 100 meters at the 6A Region III track meet with a time of 10.42. He also helped the Dawson 400-meter relay quartet of Marco Jackson, Myles Kitt-Denton, Bobby Wooden, and Shelton place second with a time of 41.32 that will also qualify for the state meet. Shelton also finished fourth in the 200 meters in 21.17.

Herpin also advanced to state in two events as the freshman easily won the discus with a throw of 145 feet, 10 inches, beating Amelia Flynt of Cinco Ranch by more than five feet.

Herpin also earned a state berth in the shot put with her effort of 41 feet, 6 inches to finish second to Keayla Dove of Cy-Lakes (43-4 ½). Lady Eagle Kalynn Broadnax took third in 41-3.

Pearland senior Cole Burgess will also be going to state after he finished second in the pole vault with a height of 15 feet, 6 inches. Jacob Adair (George Ranch) barely finished ahead of Burgess at 15-9.

Pearland girls' pole vaulter Alex Kubicek narrowly missed qualifying for state, finishing third at 12 feet, 3 inches.

Friendswood didn't have anyone qualify for state after good showings at the area meet.

State high jump hopeful Michael Hermes, who advanced to state last year as a sophomore and recently won the area meet at 6 feet, 6 inches, failed to qualify as he only cleared 6-2 at regionals for a fifth place finish. Mason Corbin (Katy Tompkins) won the event with a height of 6 feet, 8 inches.
