Dawson’s Herpin, Pearland’s Kubicek qualify for state track meet

PEARLAND DAWSON — They may go to different schools, but they are still both from Pearland. Dawson sophomore Crystal Herpin and Pearland junior Alex Kubicek will be making their second straight to the Class 6A state track meet to be held at the Michael A. Myers Track Stadium on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

While Herpin and Kubicek will be representing two different Pearland high schools, they will be pulling for one another as they compete in different events with the goal of returning home with a state gold medal.

Herpin finished seventh at state last year as a freshman in the shot put with a heave of 40-3.5 while the winning toss was 44-01.50. Herpin just won the 6A Region III title with a throw of 47 feet, 5 inches which was a personal best, but it also established a Dawson school record.

Her hard work and maturity has positioned her to be one of the elite in this event entering the 2019 state meet.

She also captured the gold medal in the 6A Region III meet in the discus with a throw of 154 feet, 10 inches and also had another effort which exceeded 152 feet. Herpin won the event by more than 11 feet as the second place finisher was at 143-05.00.

Herpin's improvement has also positioned her as an elite athlete in the discus for the upcoming state meet.

Last season, Herpin placed fifth at state with a throw of 135-11. The first place throw last year was 150-03.

In both events -- Herpin has reached the level as the person to beat at state and she still has the determination to improve and reach even greater distances.

Kubicek finished second at the 6A Region III meet in the pole vault with a height of 12-0. The junior placed eighth last year at state with the same height. Kubicek will return to state with the determination to compete at a higher level.
