Dawson diamondmen swept by Dickinson

PEARLAND DAWSON — The Dawson Eagles faced the Dickinson Gators in the opening round of the 6A Region III playoffs and were swept in a best-of-three series to end their 2019 baseball season.

Dickinson had too much firepower in the opening game of the series for a 7-1 bi-district win.

The Gator's set the stage early with five runs in the top of the first frame as they cruised to the victory.

Dickinson's Landon Roque led off the game with a walk, and then pitcher Guy Garibay helped his own cause by belting an RBI triple. An RBI grounder from Daniel Bell got Garibay home, and after Nathan Ingram was hit by a pitch and Korey Cooper doubled, Miguel Ortiz laced a two-run double for a 4-0 lead. Following a groundout, Lino Nunez drove in one more run with an RBI single making the score 5-0.

The Gators tacked on another run In the top of the second as Roque was hit by a pitch, and then Garibay drove him all the way home with an RBI double to increase the lead to 6-0

The Eagles got their only run of the game in the bottom of the third when Carter Ostrom hit a leadoff double, tagged up and reached third base on a fly out, and then scored on an error to cut the margin to 6-1.

Dickinson added one more run in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 7-1 which stood as the final score to give the Gators a 1-0 lead in the series.

Garibay was the star of the game for Dickinson as he went 2-for-3 with two extra-base hits, two RBIs and a run scored at the plate. In the win on the mound, Garibay scattered six hits over six innings with six strikeouts, no walks and one unearned run.

Dickinson 2 - Dawson 0

Dickinson was only able to get four hits off Dawson pitcher John Rawlinson, but it was enough as the Gators nipped the Eagles 2-0 to sweep the best-of-three game series to end the season for the Eagles.

The Gators plated the first run on single, walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly making the score 1-0.

While Dawson could only manage a couple of hits for the game, the Gators tallied their final run in the bottom of the fifth on a double and a two-out single to make the final score 2-0.

Jalen Freeman and Tristan Perry got the only two hits for Dawson while leaving only three runners on base for the game that presented no offensive threat against the Gators.
