Dawson loses series to La Porte

PEARLAND — There is no quit in the Dawson Eagles baseball team. The Eagles faced the La Porte Bulldogs in the Class 6A Region III bi-district playoffs in a best-of-three series.

Dawson came up short in the first game when they rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but La Porte scored the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth to take a 3-2 win in the first game.

The second game was at Dawson and the Eagles battled for most of the game, but found themselves trailing 13-7 entering the bottom of the seventh. It appeared that Dawson's season was quickly coming to an end.

But someone forgot to tell the Eagles as they scored six runs with two outs to knot up the game to force an extra inning.

La Porte scored a run in the top of the eighth for a 14-13 lead, but Dawson scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull out the unlikely victory and to push the series to a third and deciding game.

La Porte 2 - Dawson 1

There were a lot of offensive fireworks in the second game, but the third and final game settled down to who could muster a run.

The fourth inning saw Dawson score their only run in the game on an RBI double by Andrew Loudermilk.

La Porte quickly matched the Eagles with a one-run inning of its own in the fourth to tie up the game 1-1.

But the Bulldogs were able to score the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth on a controversial play.

La Porte's leadoff batter Ethan Lopez reached base on an error and moved to second on the errant throw. Justin Flores grounded out and when Lopez moved to third, the Dawson infielder acted like the ball was being thrown to the bag forcing Lopez to slide under false pretenses which is a rule violation and Lopez was awarded home plate to score the winning run to make the score 2-1.

Dawson was unable to get the tying run in the top of the seventh and the Bulldogs escaped with the hard-fought series by both teams.

The Eagles end their season at 17-12 and a third place finish in the District 22-6A race.
