January 9, 2024
The third quarter belonged to Creek as they built a 41-28 advantage in the third quarter on a 16-6 scoring run.
However, Friendswood rallied to end the third period on a 10-3 run to cut the Creek lead to 44-38 entering the fourth quarter.
Leading the Friendswood offensive surge was Dyllan Baker who converted a 3-point play while getting support from Ronin Passons who contributed a layup in the fourth quarter to give the Mustangs a 49-48 lead with 3:17 to play in the game.
Clear Creek countered with a 7-0 scoring run to retake the lead 55-49 with :43 seconds left in the game.
But the Mustangs were going to give in as they got buckets from Baker, Noah Abebe and three free throws from Baker, but in the end the Wildcats were able to prevail 59-56.
"We had chances, and the kids weren't trying to make mistakes," said Friendswood first-year head coach Danny Russell. "I was more pleased with our fortitude and playing through those mistakes. We've got guys who were able to make it a game."
Clear Creek improved to 15-7 on the season while Friendswood dropped to 13-6.
Baker finished with 18 points (16 in the second half) while Passons added nine points and Brady Fiesinger tossed in eight points.
The next game for Friendswood will be on January 3 when they face Lufkin.
