FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood head coach John Little is confident each year that he will be taking swimmers to the 4A state swim meet held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center on the University of Texas campus.
The state swim meet will be this Friday and Saturday and the Mustangs will be taking several girls to compete against the top swimmers in 4A.
Meagan Westhoven won a gold medal in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:11.61 and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.15) to earn a trip to the state meet.
Westhoven, Alexandra Taylor, Rachel Cragin, and Haley Lutz also will compete in the 400-yard free relay.
Westhoven, Kelsey Castro, Cragin, and Lutz also qualified for state after placing second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:54.09.
Cragin was named Swimmer of the Year at regionals after earning two silver medals in the relays while winning gold with a first-place finish in the 100-yard fly with a time of 58.78.
Taylor also earned a bronze medal in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.88.
The lone boy swimmer for Friendswood who qualified for state was freshman Justin Bertelsman who finished third in the 100-yard back (54.88) and placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.77) at regionals. Bertelsman's times were fast enough to earn him a call up to the state championship in both events.
