FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood head coach Kevin Parr saw his girls pull out a tight 2-1 win over Texas City in the District 24-4A opener for both teams. The Lady Mustangs then ran roughshod over Ball High 12-0 to begin district action with a 2-0 mark.
Friendswood pitcher Lauren Massar allowed one unearned run while striking out five to pick up the win.
The Lady 'Stangs picked up a run in the top of the third inning when Amber Mills beat out a bunt. Mills then stole second but the throw by the Texas City catcher was off target and the ball rolled all the way to the fence in centerfield allowing Mills to scamper in for the score and a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth frame, Friendswood's Jacie Duback blasted a double and Mills laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Duback to third. Caitlyn Garivey laced a clutch single to the outfield and Friendswood had a 2-0 advantage.
Texas City managed to get a run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 2-1, but Massar and her teammates shut down the Lady Stingarees to post the 2-1 win.
"Anytime you play Texas City, it's going to be a dogfight," Parr said. "It came down to who made the fewest mistakes, and we were fortunate to get some solid plays from our defense."
