Santa Fe edges Friendswood 5-3

FRIENDSWOOD — Santa Fe pitcher Dalton Stevens limited the Friendswood hitters to only three hits while the Indians provided just enough offense to slip past the Mustangs 5-3 in a district contest. Friendswood is now 5-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. The 'Stangs beat Texas City 12-2 in their district opener.

Friendswood struck first in the opening frame when Friendswood right fielder Garrett Leitko walked and a sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position and eventually score on an error at second base for a 1-0 lead.

Santa Fe answered in the bottom of the first with two runs as their first two batters reached base when shortstop Albert Garza led off with a single and catcher Grant Pfaff was safe on a fielding error on his sacrifice bunt try.

A sacrifice bunt by third baseman Bryce Montemayor moved both runners into scoring position, and left fielder Billy Parker knocked an RBI single into left field. First baseman Rome Shubert followed by smashing an RBI double into the right-centerfield gap, and the Indians led 2-1.

After giving Friendswood a run in the first inning, Stevens retired the next 16 Mustang hitters. Meanwhile, the Indians eventually added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 5-1 advantage.

A two-out walk in the top of the sixth Friendswood third baseman Jacob Warwick broke up Stevens’ streak of consecutive batters retired, and then shortstop Izaac Pacheco lined a single to right field to end Stevens’ bid for a no-hitter. A collision between outfielders on a fly ball in left-centerfield allowed the Mustangs’ other two runners to score to close the gap to 5-3 which stood to the end of the game.

Friendswood's top hitters were Spencer Beck (1-for-3 and two RBIs), Pacheco (1-for-3 and one run), and Mac Mims (1-for-2).
