Friendswood edges Clear Falls 4-1

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Mustangs used a late inning rally to get past Clear Falls 4-1 in a District 24-6A showdown.

Mason Hever got a clutch two-out double that plated two runs in the top of the sixth that broke a 1-1 tie.

Jake Revere and Johnnie Nemecek had both singled with two outs to set the stage for Hever's big hit.

Calvin Whitaker gave the Mustangs an added insurance run when he smashed a single to score Hever for the 4-1 victory.

Friendswood trailed 1-0 after Clear Falls scored a run in the bottom of the first thanks largely to Jaden Horlacher’s efforts. Horlacher worked a full-count, two-out walk, then advanced all the way to third base on two steals and scampered home on an error.

The Mustangs were held scoreless until the top of the fifth when they tied things up on a Clear Falls error.

Winning pitcher Rylan Kaufman was outstanding on the mound for Friendswood, throwing five innings with one hit, one unearned run, eight strikeouts and five walks. Ryan Vera tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the save, giving up only one hit and one walk and striking out two.

Pitcher Tyler Zarella put in solid work for Clear Falls, going all seven innings with seven hits, four earned runs, 11 strikeouts and one walk and throwing roughly 70 percent of his pitches for strikes.

Nemecek, Heaver and Whitaker all had two hits apiece for Friendswood. Braydon Fisher and Joey Villareal were responsible for the Knights’ only hits of the game.

Friendswood is now 2-2 in district while Clear Falls drops to 1-3.
