Friendswood boys soccer shuts out Galena Park 2-0

FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood used a suffocating defense and got just enough offense to blank Galena Park 2-0 in a Class 5A Region III quarterfinal match at Bulldog Stadium in La Porte. The Mustangs improve to 22-3-2 and advance to the region semifinals.

"We didn't play well defensively against Fulshear," said Friendswood head coach Stephen Peter. "We talked about better decisions and not making mistakes in the defensive third. The kids did a great job."

The defensive effort be the Mustangs kept Galena Park (18-3) from making any serious offensive threats throughout the entire match.

While the Mustang defense was keeping the Yellowjackets off the scoreboard, Friendswood scored their first goal with 21:56 left in the first half when Mustang forward Will Schmidt fired a shot past Galena Park goalie Antonio Zamora for a 1-0 lead.

Friendswood added another goal by Nick Miller with 12:12 left in the opening half for a 2-0 lead at intermission. The Mustang defense did the rest to claim the playoff win.

Friendswood 3- Fulshear 1

Friendswood's Louis Catchpole scored the first goal in the first three minutes of the match against Fulshear and then broke the 1-1 tie in the match's 68th minute when he scored on a penalty kick after being hard hit inside the box.

Catchpole put his game-winning kick to the left of the goalie and into the back of the net giving the Mustangs a 2-1 advantage.

The Mustangs secured the win with a goal in the 79th minute when Jonathan Murphy lobbed a pass to Chris Cooper who fired a shot past the goalie making the final score 3-1.
