Friendswood locks down Clear Lake 3-1

FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood continues to challenge for the District 24-6A baseball title and they were in good hands when Lael Lockhart handcuffed the Clear Lake Falcons by fanning 16 batters while the Mustangs got a 3-1 victory.

Lockhart gave up a pair of singles that produced one run in the top of the second and then it was time for Lockhart to lock down the Falcons.

Friendswood tied up the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Lockhart helped his own cause with a one-out single to right field. Courtesy runner Christian DuPriest stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, another wild pitch brought DuPriest home for the tying run.

The Mustangs sent to more runners across the plate in the bottom of the fifth which would seal the fate of the Falcons 3-1.

Garrett Miller led off by getting thumped by a pitch and then moved to second on a perfect sacrificial bunt by Jacob Gwynne.

Ryan Bertelsman drove in Miller with an RBI double. Carter Gwynne moved Bertelsman to third with a sacrifice fly and Connor Whitaker pushed Bertelsman home with an RBI single to post the final scoring of the game.

Lockhart allowed only three hits, one walk, and one run to along with his 16 K's. At one point in the game - he struck out 10 consecutive Falcons. He also had at least two strikeouts in each of his seven innings pitched.

“That was a great outing for Lael,” Friendswood head coach Charlie Taylor said. “We didn’t have to do much behind him.

“Offensively, it was slow-starting. We hit the ball right at them early and got some tough breaks, but I never felt bad about where we were. We made good contact the whole game.”

Friendswood is now 5-1 in district and tied with Clear Creek for the league lead.
