Friendswood falls to Dobie in soccer playoffs

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Mustangs had to face 22-6A champion Dobie (20-3-2) in the Class 6A Region III area round. Dobie advanced to the 6A state semifinals last season so the Mustangs had their work cut out for them.

Friendswood (11-10-5) battled with the Longhorns for more than 50 minutes before giving up two goals in a 2-0 loss.

Dobie scored their first goal in the 52nd minute as Bryan Nava found an opening at the Friendswood goal and sent a shot to the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Longhorns used a suffocating defense to thwart any offense that the Mustangs tried to generate including several free kicks that failed to find the mark.

In the 75th minute, Dobie's Luis Arellano fired a shot that got past Friendswood goalkeeper Mason Hunnicutt for a 2-0 lead with only five minutes remaining in the contest.

Hunnicutt came up with several big defensive plays, but eventually the Longhorns found a crack in the Mustangs armor to pull out the hard earned win to move on in the post-season.
