Lady 'Stangs fall to Clements in OT
April 11, 2016
FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Lady Mustangs and the Fort Bend Clements Lady Rangers battled for 80 minutes and the match ended the same way it started at 0-0 sending the game into overtime in the Class 6A Region III quarterfinals.
Then there was a scoreless 10-minute overtime.
But the second overtime proved to be the difference as Clements finally scored to take a 1-0 victory ending the season for Friendswood at 19-5-1.
Clements senior defender Mary Alex Senften banged home a goal with 6:48 left in the second 10-minute overtime which was all the offense Clements would need in a 1-0 victory.
"When you play a team like Clements, one mistake might be all it takes," said Friendswood head coach Laura Peter. "They're a good team, but I thought we held our own. We possessed better and kept them out of our defensive third most of the night."
Friendswood's best opportunity to break the scoreless tie in regulation came in the 33rd minute when Selina Vickery tried to score on a header after getting a corner kick from Tink Castillo, but the point-blank shot hit the post and was grabbed by the Clements goalkeeper.
"We weren't connecting up front like we normally do," Peter said. "We weren't creating as many chances. That has a lot to do with their defense, but we've had other games against defenses of that caliber where we've finished."
Friendswood still has a lot to be proud of for winning the District 24-6A title this season and for making a deep run in the post-season.
