Lady Mustangs continue winning ways in district action

FRIENDSWOOD — For the third consecutive district game, the Friendswood Lady Mustangs defeated a top district opponent in the Clear Falls Lady Knights.

Friendswood sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning.

Four consecutive Lady Mustangs played a role in the five runs scored: Hannah Carpenter (RBI groundout), Ashley Elliott (RBI single), Kendall Cross (two-RBI triple) and Emily Jackson (RBI grounder) for the 5-0 lead.

The Lady 'Stangs scored their next four runs on a grand-slam home run by Carpenter after Elizabeth Higgins (walked on four pitches), Celina Saenz (line-drive single to left) and Savannah Hartman (reached on a bunt fielder’s choice) loaded up the bases to make the score 9-0.

The Lady Knights had some scoring opportunities, but were unable to take advantage of some extra base hits.

Leading the Lady Mustangs were Hartman (two runs), Carpenter (five RBIs, two runs, two hits), Cross (two hits, two RBIs) and Higgins (two walks)

Haven Franks pitched the five-inning shutout for Friendswood, striking out one, allowing five hits and two walks for the 9-0 win. "I thought Haven pitched beautifully," Friendswood head coach Christa Williams-Yates said. "(Maddison) Demers got on with a double in the fourth inning, and we ended up walking (Erica) Riley, which was OK with me. And then she did a great job of getting the next hitter.

"Haven stayed ahead of the hitters for the most part. What I really like about her is that she's not afraid to compete. Offensively, we're making tough outs. We're not making it easy on anyone at this point."

Friendswood 2 - Clear Brook 0

Friendswood also picked up a 2-0 district win over cross-town rival Clear Brook to keep them in the playoff picture.

The win is the fourth straight league win for the Lady Mustangs and improves their district mark to 6-4.

Friendswood scored it first run in the bottom of the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Julianna Tinger and Bayleigh Lay who picked up the RBI.

The Lady Stangs picked up their final run in the third when Savannah Hartman led off the inning with a triple to right, and Hannah Carpenter drove Hartman in with an RBI single.

Two Lady Mustang pitchers combined for a shutout performance in the circle.

Alex Samonski started and pitched four plus innings, striking out five and allowing four walks and two hits.

Haven Franks entered the game with a runner on first in the fifth inning and retired all nine batters she faced, striking out four in the save.
