Friendswood diamondmen stay on winning track

FRIENDSWOOD — Friendswood has proven they belong in Class 6A as they continue to enjoy the top spot with Clear Creek in the tough District 24-6A.

The Mustangs improved to 8-1 after getting a 10-2 win over Brazoswood to avenge their only league loss in the first round.

Pitcher Ryan Shetter hurled a complete game including 13 strikeouts while allowing only two hits and four walks. Shetter struck out 8 of the first 13 batters he faced.

The Mustangs took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Ryan Bertlesman stroked a two-run single scoring Carson Kaufman and Andrew Kolodziej.

Carter Gwynne also plated a run on a sacrifice fly to score Garret Miller.

Miller added another run for the Mustangs on a double in the third.

Friendswood broke open the game in the fifth sending 11 batters to the plate while scoring six more runs making the final score 10-2.

The Mustangs had eight hits and left 13 runners on base in the lopsided victory.


Friendswood 8 - Clear Falls 7

Friendswood knocked off Clear Falls in a comeback win improving to 7-1 in district play.

Friendswood's Ryan Bertelsman went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run; Ryan Shetter went 2-for- 4 with an RBI and a run; Lael Lockhart added an RBI, scoring twice and had a walk; and Carson Kaufman added a double.

Clear Falls took a 6-2 lead after two innings and then both teams settled down until Friendswood scored three runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings for an 8-6 advantage. Clear Falls added a run in the bottom of sixth to cut the lead to 8-7 before the Mustangs blanked them in the bottom of the seventh to get the close win.

The Mustangs survived an early scoring run as starting pitcher Andrew Kolodziej lasted only one out in the first frame before Erik Spong stepped in relief to pitch 5.2 innings allowing seven hits, three runs, and striking out three for the win. Kolodziej gave up four hits, four runs, and one walk in the first. Carson Kaufman pitched the final frame to save the 8-7 victory.
