Clear Creek rallies for 10-5 win over Friendswood

FRIENDSWOOD — The Clear Creek Wildcats have a two-game lead in the District 24-6A standings after getting a 10-5 win over the Friendswood Mustangs.

Both teams battled to a 5-5 tie after seven innings sending the game into an extra inning.

The top of the eighth proved to be the difference maker as to the outcome when Wildcat Jonathan McKay reached base via a walk. McKay stole second base and eventually scored the winning run thanks to a Nick Reny single for a 6-5 lead.

From there, the Wildcats opened the flood gates with Reed Hamilton knocking in two runs on a single and Jack Kelly also driving in a run on a single for a 9-5 lead.

To put the icing on the cake, Wildcat Landon Etzel stole home for the final tally of 10-5.

In the top of the first inning, Austin Adams put himself in scoring position after stealing second and third. Etzel drove in Adams by smashing an RBI double to deep center field, and Garrett Poston followed with an RBI single for a Clear Creek 2-0 lead.

The Mustangs answered in the bottom half of the first with Lael Lockhart singling home Nick Dehoyos. Lockhart later scored on a Connor Whitaker single.

Friendswood took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second when Marcus Huerta drove in Jerett Bell on an RBI single, after Huerta reached third base on a throwing error.

Creek's Adams got on base, again stole second and third base in the top of the third and he was driven in by Kelly with an RBI single, tying the game 3-3.

Mustang starting pitcher Lockhart cruised through the top of the fourth and fifth innings, striking out four batters before eventually being relieved by Ryan Bertlesman in the top of the sixth.

In the top of the seventh inning, Etzel cranked out a two-run opposite field home run, for a 5-3 lead, which at the time seemed to be the game winner.

However, including hits from Matthew Russo and Nick Dehoyos, Friendswood hit three doubles in the bottom of the seventh to answer the Wildcats and send the game into extra innings at 5-5.
