Friendswood splits with Clear Springs

FRIENDSWOOD — The Friendswood Mustangs were shut out by the Clear Springs Chargers in a District 24-6A contest.

Clear Springs scored a run in the top of the second for a 1-0 lead and then put the game away in the sixth with two more runs and an insurance run in the seventh to claim the 4-0 district win.

Spencer Russo got the start for Friendswood as he went five and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out three with a pair of walks. Ryan Vera threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen. He allowed one run, had one strikeout, and walked three.

Izaac Pacheco led the Mustangs with two hits in three at bats on offense.

The Friendswood Mustangs took their second district game against Clear Springs 4-3 after dropping an earlier contest against the Chargers 4-0.

Friendswood scored a pair of runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead but Clear Springs cut the margin in half with a run of their own making the score 2-1.

The Chargers tied up the game in the bottom of the third, but the Mustangs answered with a run for a 3-2 advantage.

In the fifth, Clear Sprints tied up the game 3-3 with a run of their own.

But the Mustangs scored the game's deciding run in the top of the sixth when Jake Davis reached base on an error to open up the inning. Payton Ditta lays down a perfect sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher to move Davis in scoring position at second.

Asa Ehrlich enters the game as a pinch runner for Davis and moves to third when Kevin Newkirk grounds out to the pitcher for the second out.

With a 1-1 count, Seth Barber stroked a single to centerfield to score Ehrlich to make the score 4-3 in favor of the 'Stangs which stood as the final score.

Leading hitters for the Mustangs were Johnnie Nemecek who was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Izaac Pacheco was 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. Calvin Whitaker contributed a double.
