Never-say-die Lady Mustangs knock off Brazoswood

FRIENDSWOOD — The mojo for the Friendswood Lady Mustangs continues to outlive their opponents and Friendswood head coach Christa Williams-Yates saw it happen one more time against the Brazoswood Lady Bucs.
Friendswood took the first game of their best-of-three series 2-1, lost the second game 8-1, and then got their miracle finish in the seventh inning to send the Lady Bucs home with an 8-5 season-ending loss.
"I couldn't be prouder of my team right now," Williams said. "We just gutted it out."
In the first game, Friendswood came through with the game-winning run in a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sophomore catcher Elizabeth Higgins stroked an RBI single into right-center to plate pinch runner Grace Hahn to give Friendswood a 2-1 lead.
Friendswood freshman pitcher Haven Franks picked up the in as she scattered seven hits over seven innings giving up one run, two walks with two strikeouts against a very strong offensive Brazoswood team.
Brazoswood scored first with a run in the third, but Friendswood tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when junior first baseman Kendall Cross smashed a solo home run over the centerfield fence to tie up the game 1-1.

Brazoswood tied up the best-of-three series as the Lady Bucs overpowered the Friendswood Lady Mustangs 8-1.
The Lady Bucs put away Friendswood early with five runs in the opening two innings.
In all, Brazoswood's offense registered eight runs and 11 hits off three Friendswood pitchers.
The only run Friendswood was able to muster came in the top of the seventh on a home run by Emily Jackson to post the final 8-1 score.

Just when Brazoswood thought they had taken over the series after an 8-1 second game victory, the Friendswood Lady Mustangs let the Lady Bucs know there was still life in the Lady Stangs.
On the brink of elimination, Friendswood scored six runs in the top of the seventh and held on for an 8-6 win over Brazoswood at Santa Fe High School.
Trailing 5-2 entering the final frame, Friendswood got started on the come-back trail when Raegan Jones blasted a leadoff home run to centerfield to cut the lead to 5-3.
Then the Lady Mustangs got three consecutive singles by Celina Saenz, Hannah Carpenter, and Kendall Cross to load the bases with one out. Emily Jackson stepped up to the plate and delivered a two-run single to left to tie up the game at 5-5.
With two outs, Friendswood got three more runs to take an 8-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Julianna Tinger kept the rally going with a single to left to drive home the go-ahead run and then an error allowed two more runs to cross the pay station.
Brazoswood attempted to make a comeback of their own, but Friendswood was able to get the win after the Lady Bucs managed one run to make the final score 8-6.
Friendswood got a multi-hit game from Savannah Hartman (3-for-4, one run scored), Jones (2-for-2, two RBIs, one run scored), and Tinger (2-for-3, one RBI, on run scored).
